  1. Flexible Classroom Placements
Placement is based upon readiness, not age.
Is your twelve year old ready to tackle more advanced work? Is your fifteen year old struggling to keep up with the demands of the more complex material of high school? Just like younger children, teens have different patterns of development, and not every teen of a certain age is prepared to handle the same material at the same time. At Sheridan Christian Academy, we don't let your child's age dictate their placement. Instead, parents and teachers work together to decide which level is right for your teen. Click on the links above to find out more.
  2. The Time Your Teen Needs
Teens learn on their own schedules.
At every level, we use "mixed" or "mulit-age" classrooms. Even older children and teens benefit from the opportunity to mingle with kids of different ages and to take the time they need to move to the next level. Though you may be concerned that your child will be hopelessly behind if he or she is allowed to linger in the Level 3 classroom for an extra year, students do not begin to accumulate credits toward graduation until Level 4, so taking the time to ensure your child's foundation is solid before moving them on will benefit them in the long run.
  3. Individualized Learning
    Teens have unique learning styles.
If you have more than one child, you know how very different even closely related children can be, so while we have a structured curriculum at every level, teachers have a good deal of flexibility in how that curriculum is taught. Teens are given the opportunity to develop their strengths through individualized classroom assignments while also increasing competence in their areas of weakness. In addition, we offer after school tutoring one day a week.
  4. Free Time/Recess
    Even teens need a break.
The modern push to eliminate recess and free time to make more room for additional test preparation is harming our children and teens. Some unstructured time is important for children at every level, and just because a child becomes a teen does not mean that he/she can should be forced to go without breaks. The research indicates that recess enhances academic performance and improves behavior. We have structured our day to allow free time for students at every level.. For more information about the importance of recess/free time, click the link above.
  5. Gender Specific Learning Strategies
    Boys and girls learn differently.
Despite modern rhetoric to the contrary, Christians know that God created men and women differently. Now, science confirms that male and female brains are far from identical. From infancy, boys and girls display differences in brain activity that indicate gender specific learning styles and preferences. At Sheridan Christian Academy, we work to find ways to capitalize on these gender profiles to help both boys and girls maximize their learning, while continuing to focus on individual needs that may supersede gender differences. 6. Small Class Sizes
    Smaller class sizes improve learning.
While Jesus sometimes preached to crowds of thousands, he ultimately chose only twelve men to become his close disciples.. He understood the value of developing intimate relationships with those he was mentoring. So do we. That's why we strive to maintain classes with no more than 10 students. Smaller classes give students more opportunities for participation, and they allow teachers to adapt instruction for individual needs. 7. High Quality Academic Program
We offer a true "core" of solid academic knowledge
God's word is the foundation upon which our curriculum is built. Added to that foundation is high quality, classic literature, the timeless lessons of history, structured writing instruction, a math curriculum that makes sense to both kids and parents, science courses that actually enhance your child's faith, foreign language classes from Rosetta Stone, optional advanced courses from online Christian education providers, and a variety of electives that allow your teen to explore different areas of interest. For more information, click the link above.
  8. Opportunities for Service
Serving God is a privilege for Christians of all ages
As children enter adolescence, they often begin to truly recognize the needs of people in their own communities and around the world. It's important that teenagers understand that being a Christian means more than attending church and reading the Bible. Faith is active, not passive. We offer weekly opportunities for your child to participate in Christian service out in the community, and we encourage teens to discover what God is calling each of them to do for His Kingdom and to develop their own ministries of service with other like-minded visionaries.
