Science

How does the science program work?

Like the history program, our science program is cyclical in nature.  Students will study each of the four major branches of science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geology) as a whole class once every four years.  When chldren are very young, the emphasis will be upon exploring scientific concepts through hand- on activities, teacher led demonstrations, nature studies, and high-interest children's books.  As students progress in their studies, they will be taught the proper way to conduct laboratory experiments and to write lab reports.  Lessons will focus on a smaller number of scientific concepts studied in greater depth to help students retain information more readily.  At all levels, students will participate in games and projects to help expand their learning.

How does science instruction work in a multi-age classroom?

Like history and literature, our science program is designed to be taught to the whole classroom.  However, student assignments will be tailored to the skill level of the individual student at the discretion of the teacher.  For example, a five year old in a Level 1 class may fill in a laboratory worksheet with some pictures and a few words while an older child in the same classroom may be expected to write one or two paragraphs of information.

Will you use Christian or secular texbooks and materials?

Both.  While all of our textbooks are from Christian publishers, many of the additional books (often called "trade books") that are used to supplement the science curriculum are from secular publishers simply because there is a shortage of high quality books from Christian publishers.  Additionally, as  students grow older it is important for them to understand the perspective of the non-Christian scientists in order to participate intelligently in the discussions that will inevitably arise with non-believers now in and the future.  For college bound students it is also essential that they are given the foundation in the high school years that they will need to withstand the pressure to conform to a secular worldview in later years.  And finally, not all Christians are in agreement about every scientific controversy. When students learn to appreciate that our brothers and sisters in Christ may have different opinions about the"non-essentials" (or issues unrelated to the fundamental tenets of Protestant doctrine) and still be sincere Christians, they are prepared to participate more fully in Christian fellowship when they become adults.

The mission of Sheridan Christian Academy is to provide a high quality, Christ centered education that cultivates both mind and spirit while building knowledge, inquiry, self-worth, and moral fortitude upon a foundation of Biblical faith and principles.
