Levels

Though we have kept the designation of grade levels on transcripts to make it easier for your child to transfer to another school or to apply for college, Sheridan Christian Academy is designed with four multi-age levels rather than specific grades.  This type of grouping allows students the freedom to develop at their own rate without the pressure to meet developmentally inappropriate goals.  Students advance to the next level when they have achieved the necessary level of competence required to be successful in a more advanced classroom. Decisions about placement are made by parents and teachers (with student input), and these placements are very flexible.  A student might begin the semester in one level and be moved up or down if it is determined that the original placement is not a good fit .
Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
The first level is roughly equivalent to grades ranging from traditional kindergarten ages (before the imposition of new "standards") through the age seven or eight.   This is a low stress level of schooling, where students are not rushed to cross some artificial finish line before they are developmentally ready, and where imagination and play are not replaced with counterproductive "benchmark standards" and "academic rigor." Children usually remain in this level for three years.

If your child is a fluent reader who is able to understand more complex language and is beginning to write in paragraphs, Level 2 is probably the right placement. Here, he/she will begin to delve deeply into science and history topics, begin to read classic literature, and continue to work on vocabularly development and spelling skills. The Bible will be coverered more in depth at this level, and children will commit scripture to memory.  On average, eight to eleven year olds will spend three years in Level 2 and be prepared for traditional middle school work when they graduate to the next level..

Upon entering Level 3, your child will have the skills necessary to read high quality, classic literature.  He or she will be prepared participate in discussions about complex historical issues and to delve more deeply into scientific and Biblical topics.  Many students at this level will be ready to progress from arithmetic to Pre-Algebra, but each student will contine to have an individualized math program.  Students at this level will generally be between 12 and 14 years old,  and when they graduate from Level 3, they will be ready for "high school" level courses.ework.
The mission of Sheridan Christian Academy is to provide a high quality, Christ centered education that cultivates both mind and spirit while building knowledge, inquiry, self-worth, and moral fortitude upon a foundation of Biblical faith and principles.

Level 4
Special Needs Students
At this level, each student will complete four years of advanced history, science, mathematics, and literature. They will study one or more foreign languages, complete a survey of the entire Bible and participate in service projects around the school and the community.  At the completion of Level 4, students (without special needs) should be fully prepared to attend college, to learn a trade, or to enter into a life of Christian ministry.
Because of our unique structure and small class sizes we are able to welcome children with different ability levels..  Though we are not equipped to teach children with certain severe conditions, many children (even those on the autism spectrum) with developmental delays or those with specific learning disabilities may be accommodated if a support team can be  formed that includes parents, teachers, and volunteers. Please contact us, so we can discuss your child's individual needs.
